BWF - Experts In Commercial Kitchen Ventilation

Design & Planning

Every building and ventilation situation is unique so all BWF extraction systems are custom-designed and built. To design the correct solution for each application, we are able to draw upon many years of experience as well as published technical guidance.

There is a potentially bewildering array of regulation and guidance documents published from a variety of legislative and industry bodies, some with legal weight and some setting out best practice. The key ones being:

  • DW172 (Published by The BESA – Building Engineering Services Association),
  • The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998,
  • Gas Safe Technical Bulletin 140
  • HSE CIS 23 – Gas Safety in Catering and Hospitality
  • HSE, CIS 26 – Preventing exposure to carbon monoxide from use of solid fuel appliances in commercial kitchens
  • Guidance on the Control of Odour and Noise from Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems (Defra 2005 with update from EMAQ 2018

The benefit to you of engaging a professional company like BWF is that we are fully familiar with the regulations and guidance and will always incorporate the relevant parts in our designs and the supporting advice we give.

We can work from your drawings or make our own site surveys. For kitchen canopy design we would generally start from either the proposed layout of cooking equipment, or the proposed canopy dimensions or an invitation to survey and report on an existing installation.

For further information on what to consider in designing the optimum system download our Design Criteria Manual document in the “More Info” section of this website.

We normally only produce AutoCAD drawings of our designs once an order has been received but we are also able to supply drawings and specifications to support detailed planning or listed building consent applications at a modest cost.

Planning

With reference to the key points taken from our Design Criteria Manual in the “More Info” section of this website;

  • As the owner / occupier / user of the premises and commercial kitchen, you have a statutory duty not to cause a nuisance to your neighbours.
  • In the case of a commercial kitchen ventilation system nuisance could be caused by the generation of odours or noise
  • DEFRA provide useful supporting information see link below
  • DEFRA also provide a useful guidance document – (see in documents) which although now officially withdrawn still provides useful background information.
  • Depending on a variety of factors such as size, location, the presence or not of an existing ventilation system, the current planning use of the building etc, planning permission may be required for your system. BWF can provide advice and support in this area but are not planning experts and so you are always advised to seek suitably qualified professional assistance either from a planning consultant or by directly approaching the planning authority.

As with the safety aspects of design described previously, the benefit to you of engaging a professional company like BWF is that we are fully familiar with the regulations and guidance and can generate DEFRA compliant designs which will achieve the necessary planning permissions.
